Mrs Jeanne

Posted on 1:39 PM by clark

September 18, 2004 - September 18, 2012

8 Years

Mrs Jeanne

This is the end of the world. No one could stop me to believe that, on September 18, 2004. This Saturday, I woke up very late in the morning. Still, I wanted to stay on my bed with that rainy day. The sky was dark, the rain dropped slowly but continuously. Several kids were running back and forth under the rain. My mom was excited to wash her clothes. It is a habit for women in Haiti to do laundry while it is raining. They say that water is coming for free, so you have got to take advantage of it.
It was 5 PM. Yet, the rain didn’t want to stop. My neighborhood was blurred by the rain while I was watching on my window. I could hardly see what was going on in the street; but, I was pretty sure that no one was out there in that city where few people own a private car. Most of them walk to go where they want or take bus for farther places.
The meteorologist had announced the passage of a Hurricane named Jeanne for the day. It had to come to the “ Departement de L’artibonite”, especially in the city of Gonaives. The population was aware of that. However, no such unended rain was expected. So, some people started to question themselves about the situation: it had been raining all day, sometimes heavy and then weak, but never stoping. Others just didn’t really care about that. They slept early with the hope of a beautiful sunny day tomorrow.
I was part of those who started to worry about the hurricane; then, I decided to go to sleep. It was actually 7 PM. Suddenly, the phone rang. It was my friend Antonio on the phone with a scary voice. He asked me to leave the house with my family to go to a higher building because a river has taken his way through the city. I didn’t want to go anywhere until I heard, far away, people screaming. I couldn’t understand what was going on, but I convinced my family to leave the house in case of inundation. Our new shelter would be that big builder in the neighborhood.
Quickly, we closed the door and moved to cross the street.  By the time to get in the middle of the street, the water had already reached my knee. Scared, we moved faster and got into the building. We were not the only ones to get there; other people were also looking for a safer place. However, several families stayed inside of their houses. They thought that no water could surpass the level of their bed. So, a better shelter was not necessary.
A few minutes later, the atmosphere of the city was the same as a funeral ceremony. Cries and sobs could be heard by even a deaf person. The water had getting higher and stronger. Even those who knew how  to swim would have to face death.
“Save me, save me” I was shaking when I heard that. Could that be people struggling in the water? I asked myself. The truth was too hard to believe. I could also hear the noise of the water like a strong wind coming all over the city. Everybody in the building started to cry. Some of them made their last confession. Would Hurricane Jeanne be that dangerous? Fear swallowed me. I thought that it was the end of the world; everybody was going to die.
I was actually on the second floor, and I could see through the lightning how the water had covered the top of my house. I was crying and praying. I said ,”God would you let us died?”
Suddenly I heard a huge noise. It was the wall of the yard. The water broke it. I lost all my faith. I thought that since the wall of the yard has broken, the building would be next. I made my last confession and was ready to die.
Quietly, the night ended and so did the power of the water. A new day had begun. A day that I had never seen in my life.  Dead people, broken cars and every other kind of trash were all over the street. The city looked completely different. Not only has the city changed but also my life. Since then, every Sep 18, i feel a weird feeling. I feel like crying, i feel like sharing my memories. That is why i m writing this note today September 18 2012.

Happenings

Posted on 7:48 AM by clark

We've been on vacation!!!!!!!!!! Pardon our absence on some amazing stuff  pertaining to Haiti these last couple of weeks.
One of us was in Haiti and I think she has some pictures to post but don't quote me on that lol. As for me, I was on a Eastern Caribbean cruise. It was great but Haiti sounded so much better to me after I saw the Carnaval des fleurs happenings. It looked like such a great time! I will post some of my favorite pictures later.
The other huge thing that we've been excited about is TEAM HAITI in the Olympics. I can't tell you how proud we are that we had 5 great athletes representing us A l'Haitienne style this year. We're gonna have a post about them soon.
I  have a legume lalo recipe by request coming up as well as a pretty cool interview with the awesome model Belouka that I should've posted before but you know how vacations mess with our minds lol.
Anyways thanks for stopping by. Come back soon for the happenings. A bientot!

Kenep: Summer Stories Series

Posted on 8:52 PM by clark

My fondest childhood memories in Haiti are lodged in the summer.
In the summer we had time for mischief, time to be creative, time to discover all kinds of things. Well at least that's how it was for my best friends and I.

Every summer was different in the amount of freedom we took, the things we discovered, and how scorching hot the weather was but one thing never changed.
Starting in July, when my mother would be doing her usual summer teaching and side hustle activities, she would leave a couple of dollars on the table for me and my best friend/cousin every morning. Without fail, we would be up bright and way earlier than kids should get up in the summer. We would grab the dollars and marched on to roam the outdoors market nearby for one thing; the sweetest kenep we could find. Later with satisfied smiles,  hands full, and sometimes a seller calling us out for sampling without buying, we would make it back to my front porch to sit there and enjoy our kenep while we  people watched.

To this day I can hear warnings from our neighbors "timoun nou manje trop kenep, yon pye kenep ap leve nan vant nou wi" We would giggle and shake our heads no, there is no such thing as too much kenep and no a tree cannot possibly grow inside our stomachs and if it did well, more kenep for us lol.

Now that i'm older and certainly not in Haiti every summer, I relish every chance I get to savor this fruit. It's amazing how I never tire of it and I'm forever telling people to try it. I'm a kenep pusher lol. I could eat it every day for the whole summer. I get ridiculously happy when someone brings me some as a gift. As a matter of fact, the bunch that my grandma brought me from Haiti last week inspired this story.
If you're looking for it, it's usually called mamoncillo around here and sometimes you can find it in Publix stores in Florida and also different Caribbean stores everywhere else. Once I found some at a local health food store in Central Florida, so just keep your eyes open and enjoy if you find some good ones :)

New Year

Posted on 3:17 PM by clark
So the holidays have come and gone and I thoroughly enjoyed them A L'Haitienne style . I celebrated Christmas Eve, I had my traditional Haitian soup joumon on New Year's day, and I made sure to be with my friends and family as much as possible ... especially my sister Jen  (yay)
I had a great time for the end of 2011 and beginning of 2012. I wanted to post some recipes for the New Year but this will have to wait for a while longer because I've been working (yay!) but I've been sick for the past couple of days (boo!)
Anyways, I pray for great things this year... better health, more money, more blog visitors... lol
P.S I know it's late but January 1st is Haiti's Independence Day so Happy Independence day to all my Haitiens.
My mother's soup! That's her biggest pot... and yes it has to be that full lol

After church service and our 1 am on Jan 1st soup :)
Also after church service ginger tea and hot chocolate with Haitian bread :) :) :)
and finally... Merry Christmas from A L'Haitienne crew lol

Un-Haitian food and birthday pics

Posted on 7:18 PM by clark

And so it was on Na's birthday that we decided to be un-Haitian and try some new food. I mean really as a "typical" Haitian you won't see me eat Sushi.... non merci. We, well at least people in my family turn up their noses at other people's food. That actually includes some other Haitian people's food but I digress... Clearly, you can see that Nacha and I have been Americanized hehe. We went to a new place that serves Thai/Japanese/Peruvian food. I was so happy, it felt like my birthday too because I love Thai food hehe...
That is how i discovered green tea ice cream in the form of Mochi (love it!) and crab/avocado salad (love it!)
I definitely recommend Komoon Thai and Sushi in Naples. The service was excellent and the food delicious.

We also went out to dance for 30 minutes because Na had to go to work like a couple hours later :( but it was the best 30 minutes of dancing and pictures ever!!!!!!!

'Twas fun! We plan on doing it again when Jen comes for Christmas. It will be even better!

More of my favorite food!

Posted on 10:35 PM by clark

I haven't been thrilled with how unfit I've become lately, so I've finally gotten serious about getting back to healthy habits. I started eating healthier... but I cannot give up my favorite food. banann avek pwason!!! Remember the last Haitian Plate!
So I've resolved to make them differently now no more frying! So this is how I eat my bannan avek pwason
and like this when I get tired of the above. These plaintains are ripe...
Sooo yeah. I've been able to avoid white rice and meat for some time now. Once in a while I'll get a little bit on the side but I've mostly been eating fruits and veggies. I can do this only because my mom is trying to eat healthier too since apparently she now has cholesterol problems. She is not giving me grief about "not eating"

In another note, I finally used the pool yesterday. Makes no sense to have a pool and not use it... Of course it's not summer anymore so it's a good thing that Florida heat knows no season. It was in the upper 90's!
This has definitely solidify my #teamfitbody dreams. Maybe I should've done this earlier haha.
A combination of pose, sucking in and several shots to get this lol. By my bday I need to get this without trying :)

Peep the garden in the background. I'm telling you these Haitians I live with know no boundaries. Kareman they have the backyard looking like a Haitian garden ... Well  actually I enjoy the fresh food so I'm not complaining hehe.

Riddim Runway 2011: Caribbean Fashion and Music for a cause

Posted on 10:40 PM by clark

Riddim Runway is a fashion show/benefit concert that takes place annually in southwest florida.
When I found out that all this show was free... You know my Haitian self had to make it there.
None of my friends were available so I dragged my mom and my little sister with me ( hey let's make it a family affair all we need to hear is "free")
Well we were late... no surprise there, but we did get to enjoy most of the show.We brought the canned food that we wanted to donate to the charity du jour ( a soup kitchen) and then we enjoyed the night
Every outfit here was less than 20 dollars!

Fashion wise- we saw 3 collections and they were ok. most of the things I saw, I probably wouldn't wear but it was fun to watch them prance around the stage to awesome reggae music.

Ky-Enie

Wayne Wonder!!!

Music wise-We got to see Kehv, Ky Enie and Wayne Wonder. The first 2 I really didn't know much but my mom liked Kehv (she even wanted to buy his cd...I know right) I like Ky Enie and I love love Wayne Wonder :) I'm glad I got to hear some of his new songs along with oldies such as "no letting go"
with Keyv

We were dancing, singing, laughing fools :)
It was so much fun and I'm glad I went with my mom, I didn't know she would enjoy it so much. She's now telling everybody that she saw " superstar Wayne Ronda" hehe

Mama and little sis my loves

Moi :)
we headed home tired and satisfied. We will definitely try to make it next year. We love free fun!!!!!!!

Oh and I took some really bad videos  of Wayne Wonder lol here's one of the better ones

Map li ak ke kontan: Summer Stories Series

Posted on 12:43 PM by clark
Le Jardin d'Enfant I remember those days of reading and reciting lovely poetry, drawing with chalk, singing French nursery rhymes, carefree.

When physical education was playing non-stop tag, jump roping with cousins and friends - double dutch. The days of "M'ap Li ak Kè Kontan", listening to the grownups tell folktales, feeling sorry for Bouki while being entertained by the wits of Malice (Bouki et Ti Malice).

The days of Alouette and dancing sur le pont d'Avignon - wondering where the "pont" was located. Every now and then, it is necessary to take a trip down memory lane. Take a journey. Bon voyage!

When you're with great people

Posted on 10:31 PM by clark
We went out to eat at this awesome place
The food was ok but the ambience and locale were top!

It was a great night. All Haitian all the way
The restaurant is called Jack's River Bar and they have a pool avaiable to the patrons. A pool! we were in picture heaven haha

I quite enjoyed  my outfit here. These are some of my favorite colors to wear. I am wearing these awesome yellow pants that I thrifted for cheap and the top I've had for a while. All in all, this was a wonderful evening full of laughter. Special thanks to my church first lady who picked up half of the tab for us. We love you!!!!!
